Spa wants to hire MTs with "full clientele"?

I saw an ad for a spa that said:

"Those applying for the Massage Therapist and Stylist positions MUST have a FULL clientele. "

Curious... do they expect a massage therapist to bring his or her clients to the spa? Doesn't that seem a little backwards? I'm trying to imagine a situation in which a therapist with a "full clientele" would want to do so.

What's your take on this?

Huh, I agree with you, Josh. If a therapist had "full clientele" already, WHY would they be looking for a job??? But yeah, I agree- that is what that sounds like they're asking for.

I have seen ads for therapists/hair stylists who might have at least SOME of their own clientele. But "full"? Who determines what that means? LOL!

My take... a bit odd... :lipsaresealed: maybe it's for MT's who are not wanting to rent space, but just make a commision and get out of a lease situation? Seems un-profitable.

i know it technically isn't a spa, but massage envy has a 3yr non-compete clause. or at least the one in folsom, ca did.

I have noticed this mostly with hair stylist and esthetician ads - but starting to see it now with MT's too.

Really - what are they thinking?
If I had a full book I wouldn't NEED them at all!
I have a great treatment room.
Plus the commission splits with some of these "spas" are HORRIBLE.

What are they bringing to the table that would entice ANYONE to bring their valuable clients there?

NOT a good deal IMO.

I think they are just looking to poach an MT from another establishment by offering a better comp scheme.

If you are of the school that clients are associated with the MT, then it makes sense. Hire someone who is busy elsewhere (no, not you, ew) and they bring their regulars and get 5% more per service out of it, or whatever.

The biggest drawback to this approach to hiring is reaping what you sow. Expect your staff to leave and do the same to you.

Of course, the way to prevent it is to make sure clients associate themselves with the wonderful experience of the establishment, including the soothing touch of ANY member of the massage staff.

Not all spas have a non-compete, and above all NCAs have to be "reasonable" which I think MEs would be judged not to be, even by this evil, greedy spa owner.

I work in a Spa for 2 years and I was responsible for getting my own clients even though I was an hourly employee. And there where time when my book was not filled to the owners satisfaction and I would get the third degree. This brings up a good point, when you are an employee who should be doing the marketing for services the business or employee?

As a business owner, employer, and MT, I have a multilevel perspective:

1. The business owner is responsible for marketing the business. Employees may be required (paid) or asked to volunteer to participate in some (paid) marketing activities. The business owner is also responsible for monitoring the outcomes of marketing activities and making changes (or obtaining help) as needed.

2. The employer is responsible for selling new clients on the merits of the business and then enticing clients to return and/or try more of their massage therapists. The employer should try to match up clients with appropriate therapists.

3. The massage therapist is responsible for building a stable base of repeat clients. This ensures a more consistent level of income throughout the year, and provides some individual cushion against economic pressures. Overall business volume may drop, but MTs with many regular clients will barely notice a change while MTs who don't get requests are suddenly struggling.

• * In other words, when people in my area think, "I need a massage," my first concern is that they think of our business as THE place to go.
  * My second concern is that I want them to feel confident in their MT and have a great experience so that they want to return and/or recommend us to others.
  * Third, as an MT, I want my clients to think of me as THE person to see and/or recommend to others. My employer can't do this for me - it's up to me.

Now the clinic where I am at now is the conplete opposite. The owner does not want us coming in with a following or marketing ourself. The owner wants to be in charge of bring in all new clients. Now this has been a sort of odd sticking point in our realtionship bc I have brought many of my owner clients and I really don't have the room for new ones at this point. I have decided that he is a control freak and needs to be needed. :

But I suspect that it is because of the economy that these MT's are looking for additional work.

The owner said something that made me sort of understand why. Because if by the off chance I leave all those clients will probaly not stay at his place bc I brought them in and that is money out of his pocket to try to rebuild what is has lost. IDK t017 .
