Spinal Stenosis

My step father was having numbness in his thumb. He went to the Dr. they did MRI/Xrays Dr told him he has spinal stenosis at his c4 vertebra. They made an appointment with a surgeon to discuss his options. From what I understand about S.S it is a narrowing of spaces in the spine (backbone) that results in pressure on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots.Any insight on working with this type of client?many thanksklowe

Wow   thats really interesting.  Mybe see what a chiropractor has to say before he goes under the knife.perhaps try some deep palplation of the multififdi and rotatores and other surronding muscles around the C4 area to see if there is some excess tonicity  holding the bone down.Maybe, just maybe there may be some brachial plexus entrapment causing numbness.tonicity of scalenes and pec minor may need to be reduced...Just some ideas for you thats all...

Spinal Stenosis

I get some referrals from a neurologist for massage work for spinal stenosis clients.You may not be able to cure the problem, but I have experienced that many of these clients do get help through massage work.  She recommends they come in at a rate of once per week for an initial 8 weeks and then checks them from there.In my experience, in eight weeks they know quite well if they are experiencing help or not.Also, I do believe anything that helps before getting surgery is worth the effort.Traction work may also be of help.Hope this helps.

i agree. I thought TOS and brachial plexus as well, but you know sometimes... the first thing was recommended that he see a surgeon.. oh how mad am I?I will see what they say.thank you very much fr the response.
