Stepwise campaign

Have you seen the ads on TV? This campaign is to raise awareness of athlete's foot and fungal nail infection. The website is www.stepwise-uk.com and you can download or send off for an information booklet. I ordered one and it seems useful and factual. I'm thinking of taking a bundle of them into the day centre where I'm a volunteer.

Sorry to digress but after hunting around I've found a toenail cutting course (it's called foot care but it's basically about toenails). I have lots of older clients and would like to be able to offer this service for free instead of their having to wait for ever on a waiting list. I rang our local podiatry service and, as I do work for the day centre which is part of a mental health association, they will let me attend. The course is usually for NHS staff only.

Yes i have noticed it & initially thought it was purely a money making scheme, quick fix package -a good one at that.
Usual treat sympton as opposed to cause...but from what you've said it sounds good, as there is much bacteria & fungal growths around. And sometimes a decent fix is a blessing. Thanks for that link, i'll read it.

Well as it's sponsored by a drug co I initially thought what you did Pre! But I like the fact that they put the onus on personal responsibility and getting treated so we don't infect others (such as our dear reflexologist haha). Plus, they aren't plugging any particular product which makes a nice change.

Good idea Siobhan, ideal to give clients an info pack. Tea tree oil does seem to help if applied regularly.

I often use an emery board on the OAP's and am thinking of offering pedicures, as I like doing them anyway. (No cutting involved) May do a course for it, although daughter trained in it and shown me.

Will your insurance cover you for cutting nails if you do this course.

I really don't know about the insurance. I plan to offer the service free of charge at the day centre. I must make enquiries though.

Hello,
If you cut toenails you have to be very careful of litigation from professional claimers they can pick out practioners who are not qualified for the job, and if you don't have insurance you may leave your self open to a negligence claim against you from a patient if you make a mistake.

Be very careful when treating diabetics too, and patients with neuopathy, any mistake can be very serious in that gangrene may develope if a cut is made.

A bit of friendly advice is only do what you have been trained in and have insurance for.
