The small system I use on house calls is usually behind me on the floor. It stays out of the way, and if necessary, I can tuck the speakers in around the base of my stool. If there's room, (and there usually is) I try to get the speakers spread out as far as possible, just to allow the stereo effect to have its maximum potential.
And DoLLz, regarding your comment "It was kinda scary to me. He played the nature and animal sounds and the downbeat which had a bit of bass to it would make my heart feel like it was beating weird. I didn't like that." I would never place my speakers in direct contact with the table. This can in effect turn the table into a sounding board which is way too invasive in my opinion.
Never underestimate the power music (good or bad) can have on us. In the 1960's, the British Rock group The Moody Blues, discovered that if they played a certain note, (they didn't specify which one for obvious reasons ) reversed it, slowed it to half speed, and oscilated it, the reaction would be that the listener's bowels would move! NOT what I want happening on my table!
