Waldoboro — Downeast School of Massage will host its 17th annual Student Massage Clinic starting Friday, March 3.
The clinic is an opportunity for members of the community to become familiar with massage, and for students of the school to get a taste of the “real world” — taking on individual clients with individual physical realities — in a secure, supervised setting.
Special free clinics include pregnancy massage and children’s massage, scheduled periodically throughout the clinic calendar.
“Each student clinic has been a real success story,” said DSM Director Nancy Dail. “People from the community will get a chance to receive massages for a very reasonable price, and it is a wonderful opportunity for students to work with people they have never met before, helping the students to develop the personal interaction skills that are so important in a private clinic setting.”
The institution at DSM is licensed by the state of Maine. Students receive over 600 hours of training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, pathology, ethics, related subjects, and special modalities such as sports massage, deep tissue techniques and energy courses.
As part of the required program for the therapeutic massage course, the clinic rounds out the student’s experience in a practical setting. Each student must complete 71 hours of therapeutic massage in clinic as well as outside logged hours and case histories.
Beginning March 3, the clinic will be open on a variety of Fridays, and then on Wednesdays and Fridays in August throughout the clinic season. A complete schedule of dates and times is available at the school and on the school website at downeastschoolofmassage.net.
A donation of $35 is requested. A senior citizen discount is offered.
DSM is located off Route 220 North on Moose Meadow Lane in Waldoboro, just 2 miles from Route 1 and Moody’s Diner. To request a detailed copy of clinic dates and times or to make an appointment to receive a supervised student massage, call the school at 832-5531 or email [email protected].
