Student Insurance

Has anyone got any tips on what type and where to get student insurance?

I am soon to do my assessments for VTCT aroma and swedish and lots of friends have expressed an interest in letting me practice on them and some are even passing my details on to their friends who would be interested. Whilst this would be great for experience etc I am worried about where I would stand should the unthinkable happen and would like to look into insurance as a student.

Some people say I will be ok as long as I don't charge but I don't know (also some are a bit of a trek and I would like to be able to cover costs of petrol, oils, washing of towels etc)

Any thought?

you should be covered under your college so in theory there is no need for insurance as a student....
all you need to get your clients to sign a consultation saying they are happy to be a case study...

just one more word of advice.....

when i did my a&p and massage i made the mistake of travelling to my case studies house's to do my case studies.... they messed me around something rotten and obviously didn't pay me a penny for it (being a student, and not qualified its a bit wrong to charge imo)
i got really hacked off at how i was being messed around, i mean, it wasn't as if i was short of volunteers! i ended up changing all my case studies round half way through!

when i did reflex and aroma after that i was much firmer - i said "if you don't want to come to me i'll find someone else who will" and they were all still queuing up!

if you want case studies, and if people want free treatments make them come to you

bonus of doing them at college is that you get to use their oils and equipment, and not your own.....

don't worry about your washing too much!

I've recently joined the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists) as a junior member. I'm also doing my VTCT Body massage course and have a 1st degree in Reiki. I know they do Treatment Liability Insurance, at the moment it is being updated, but they do insurance for case studies.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, it's something I'm looking into myself and I'm hoping that I will be able to find out more in the next month or two as my course finishes in May and I would like some more practical experience.

Thanks Emma but due to circumstances I am not able to do any case studies in college so that one is out.

I must admit that I have found people think its a great idea in theory but try to pin them down to dates and times and they are suddenly too busy - maybe I just have shy friends! (maybe its me! ) Our church vicar seems keen and that will really test my professionalism if he is serious - if I can do that then I can manage anything.

izzig...what about doing them at your own home?
i think if people think that they are going to have to pay and your not yet qualified they might not be so keen? i'm not sure, i guess it depends on the indiviual.
if you do end up travelling to people homes make sure they understand that you are charging them to cover your traveling costs, and not for the treatment.

there really should be no need to pay for insurance - for case studies you should be covered by your college's insurance... as i mentioned before, you will just need to get your case study clients to sign something that says they agree to be a case study for you.

We definitely had to get student insurance when studying. Unless colleges just specialise in health and complementary therapies and have a block policy, it is unlikely they will have cover for you.

FHT do student insurance which you can upgrade once you get your qualification.

You do need student insurance for most therapies. IGPP offer student insurance which can then be upgraded to full insurance once you have qualified.

We had to provide our insurance certificate for the examiner to see along with our case studies.......

I thought that you had to get student insurance. Would you want a fellow student treating you if they weren't insured? Izzig, please check out the insurance situation with your course asap!

Perhaps you could do swaps with people from your course or on other courses? A couple of my case studies would cook me a meal in exchange for a treatment - that always seemed very fair to me!

None of the tutors have mentioned needing insurance and they know we need to do 20 treatments for case studies and are expecting us to do them out of college so I will check with them.

The only problem with the meal thing is that they would have to cook for my husband and kids too so they may not be so keen!

I've had mixed thiings from different courses, for my AOR reflexology we had to have insurance.. no questions asked, other courses such as VRT and Hopi Ear Candling they've asked to see that I'm insured (cipes of the certs), but all the ones I've taken at colleges haven't been fussed at all.. if in doubt check, Lookign back I'd not train without insurance anymore, often a college will insure you implicitly for on-site treatments, but they ofen say they can't be held responsible for mistakes you make outside the classroom. Always best to be sure..
