Student reflexologist wanting to work in hospital/hospice how to go about it/quals needed ?

Hi all, i'm student reflexologist wanting to work in a hospital or hospice, I want to help people within this secot if possible. I know reflexology can help both generally with minor problems but wouls really want to help someone that really needed it.

I'm doing vtct at moment will i need to go on to advance ot foundation degree ? if so where would anyone recommend i do this, really appreciate some help as I will be finishing soon and want to embark asap on progessing within hospital/hospice.

Sorry it’s taken a while to answer but have only just seen you question. To be honest I cannot really answer it, but I remember a jobs add for my local hospice and that just said qualified aromatherapist or reflexologist. You could ask at your local hospital and hospice to find out more.

When I qualified five years ago, most hospice jobs for therapists were voluntary, which meant that many newly qualified therapists worked there for a while to get some experience and then left when their businesses picked up (and they needed to earn some money).

Whilst there still are many volunteer posts, there are also paid posts available, although most now are asking that therapists are a member of the Reflexology Forum (or equivalent bodies in Aromtherapy or Massage). This means that you should have VTCT Level 3 minimum if taking the qualification now - or equivalent in ITEC or AOR.

From October of this year, there will also be industry wide minimum requirements in initial training and for those wishing to work for the NHS (primarily in cancer care and infertility care). Therefore, additional courses in these subjects will now have to be over two days each with the additional requirements of written examinations, project work, detailed portfolios of case studies and a practical examination. Those who have already undertaken one day courses, can upgrade by submitting a project and detailed case studies.

Hi Sue

See if your local hospitals and hospices take on therapists. This sort of thing is usually voluntary, and still there are therapists queueing up round the block for the chance to give their services. What a good bunch! Are you interested in any particular patient group eg the elderly, people with MS, people with cancer etc? Only there are courses run on topics such as palliative care which would probably be a good add on to your studies. There is a training centre near Hampton Court outside London which offers courses for therapists interested in cancer care, and I'm sure there are other courses being offered too. It may well be a pre-requisite from hospitals that you have had specialist training.

There is a pamper day which is held in our area twice a year, where people with cancer and their carers are offered treatments, workshops and lunch. Care of the carer is something that can get overlooked, and if you are looking someone who is sick you in turn need looking after. Just something to think about. My friend volunteered for a while giving treatments in a hospice, and she treated carers exclusively. They need lots of support, love and a friendly ear to help them through.

Thanks very muchforyour reallyuseful comments and information. I do want to work in cancer care and help where I can, don't mind doing it voluntary but really do want to make a difference full time in cancercare. I think when the time comes (which will be next few months) I will most definately look at courses for cancer care etc and extend my knowledge and gain what I can to give to others.
