When a couple in British Columbia learned through prenatal tests that their baby would likely be born with Down syndrome, they decided to terminate. Problem was, they weren’t the pregnant ones — their surrogate was. She was determined to see the pregnancy through.

There are surrogate moms who, after nine months of gestation, decide they want to raise the baby. There are women and men who hire surrogates but later decide that, never mind, one or the other or both don’t want the kid after all. And now there’s this: a couple who wants to terminate a pregnancy and a surrogate who doesn’t.

IMHO the one carrying the baby gets to make that decision. The donor/patron in the deal can't decide that anymore than a b/f can decide if his g/f aborts or not with his justification being she doesn't work and he's the one who pays the bills.

People who hire surrogates need to spell out all possible outcomes prior to pregnancy during the deal making phase. If the purchasing party does not want a child with a disease or deformity, it should be stated that if tests reveal that, they will not take delivery (pardon the pun) if the child is carried to term. If the surrogate wants to keep the child and not abort, she will have to raise the child. Of course if the purchaser's sperm is involved he would be liable to have to pay her child support, though he can't be forced to take actual physical custody.

For a single guy the surrogate route is useful if one really wants a child but not a relationship. If the surrogate goes along with the deal, you have a child. If she rejects the deal and opts to keep the child, well you still have a child (and still have to pay to raise said child - the payment comes in terms of child support) though you don't physically have the child you at least get to know you have one out there.

Could a test before would have determined if the child was going to be born with Down syndrome?.

I think the earliest they can test is at around 10 weeks into the pregnancy. There's no way to tell before the pregnancy actually happens.

At the end of the full article it says the surrogate did ultimately honor the contract and terminate the pregnancy.

Why would a single guy try the surrogate route?. The new born needs two parents not one.

One needs a license to drive a car, practice medicine, hunt, fish, weld, and all sorts of other things... but ANYONE can have a kid. :shock:

Creating life... anyone can do...

But to raise a child and BE a parent is the single most important thing ANYONE can do. :great: :love:

One should take the time to consider the importance... :arf:
