Swollen under knee

I had a client this morning with sciatica on her R side. She was very swollen just below her R knee, but there was no heat and no pain. I have heard that when you break your hip, it can cause your knee to swell, but is that true when the hip muscles are bound as well? I recommended she see a doctor and didn't massage her from the knee down.

Swelling to the anterior is an overproduction of synovial fluid that has escaped the normal encapsulated area. This can be due to the fact that she injured the knee as well or is walking abnormally because of the sciatica. I would suggest icing it, as well as a recommendation for an antinflamitory. Due to how much it is swollen, the MD may drain the joint. I would honestly have her see an orthopedist to have a consultation. But yes, knees and hips are connected, so if one is not working right the other will have issues!

I agree that it's wise for this client to see her doctor, to try & determine the reason behind the swelling. Sometimes, however, the cause can't be determined, and knee drains are usually temporary. Lymph Drainage Therapy is a great way to keep swelling under control and help the body re-establish homeostasis. If you haven't bought Sean Riehl's video yet, I recommend you do!

It's on the way. I finally decided I'm taking that course this year for my CEU to familarize myself with it and it's very likely I will take Upledger's course next year in Palm Beach, FL. My goal is to put my Gift Certificate money to the side to save up for it.
