I am looking for a tax manual for massage therapists.  I wanted to take the LMT Success Group tax seminar in Pittsburgh but can't make it.  I keep getting conflicting opinions about what is and what is not deductible.

Honestly, the best answer is to find a good CPA in your area. Get recommendations from clients, friends, etc.There is much more to the tax code than just what's deductible or not. A good CPA will cost you a bit up front (keep in mind that the fees you pay to an accountant are tax deductible as well) but they will save you money, time and many potential headaches down the line. I am one of the few MT's I know who take my taxes to a CPA - and I make spend less in taxes than any of them. Believe me, whether this is a hobby or a career for you, a CPA will SAVE YOU MONEY in the long run.Best of luck!Angel

I'm already using a CPA and she doesn't recognize a lot of the deductions that other MT's say they're given by their tax people.  What type of deduction are you given for daily food when at school?  I thought it was $25 a day but I'm allowed a perceneforum.xxxe of my actual amount by my CPA.

Working with a CPA is really the way to go. If you're determined to do it on tour own, the IRS offers free/cheap classes in most cities.  Go to your local IRS office and ask for a schedule of classes for independent/ small business owners. Sometimes Big Brother is willing to be helpfull. Also, if you would like a mentor for your new life in the big, big world of small business, you can find one with the Service Corpse of Retired Executives-(SCORE). They are a beautiful group of people who just can't be still in their retirement, and choose to spend their time helping out small business people like you and me. You also have some helpful resources at your local Small Business Association.  These are people who are making their living, helping you make a living.  "People who need people, are the luckiest people in the world."- some sappy old song

Yeah. So, like I just suggested, there's lots of free/cheap ways of finding that out. Sure, some folks here may have some experience with this, but the best, most definitive answer would be gained on a BB for CPA's.
