Telephone enquiry. Unsure. What would you do?

Hi,

Not sure where to post this. I tried a search for this subject as I know there have been similar posts before but kept being told I hadn't entered enough words however many I put!

I have had an enquiry from a gentleman asking for treatment. I am a mobile therapist and he does not have a place of his own for me to visit as he is in the forces but he suggested a B&B he uses!

I really feel unsure about this as I would be alone with him. My husband would not mind waiting outside in the car but alarm bells are ringing.

What would you do?

Your post is OK here, though you'll find many threads on this kind of topic in the Massage forum.

The problem with Search is that you have to use words of FOUR digits or more ... it won't recognise three-letter words ... really! So one has to be a bit cunning, and I just tried a search on 'safety therapists' and this brought up 65 results on All Forums, but a much shorter list on the Massage forum revealed all the ones which had come to mind.

Unfortunately, there's no point my giving a link to the Search results page itself, because those links only work for the person who has done the search, but give the above a try, and you should find them all.

I COULD come back and post individual links ... but the sun in shining, LOL.

I have to say if your instinct is making you feel like this then I don't think I'd go. This guy is probably completely genuine but I do rely on my gut feeling and if you are feeling tense during the treatment [which you probably would be if you went] then I'm thinking you wouldnt do the best treatment you could if that makes sense.

I know its really hard when we are all trying to get every client we can but in this case I'd probably cancel. I think we have to trust our instincts.

If you still wanted to do the treatment, Is there someone you can take with you into the treatment as a chaperone?

I was taught with my reiki lessons that if I felt uncomfortable doing a treatment alone I could take a chaperone with me, and coz im male if I was to treat a lady they/I would need a chaperone in that case aswell.

He has no base / home to call his own....and yet he wants a treatment from a mobile therapist?

Wouldn't he be better having a treatment from a therapist in a salon?

You asked what would we do...I for one would say I am booked up for several weeks and unable to help.

I'd be extremely careful with this one.

I used to work in Health & Safety for many years, and the risks that you face as a lone worker shouldn't be underestimated.

It's all well and good if your husband is outside, but not much help if something goes wrong in the room.

The man may be genuine, in which case he wouldn't mind you taking your husband in with you. Personally, I think I'd refuse - sounds a bit dodgy to me and your safety is paramount.

I agree with all that's been said - go with your gut instinct. If you do go you may well be feel uneasy whilst you are there and therefore be able to give a good treatment. There are plenty of other clients and he will soon forget about it if you turn him down.

another problem you may encounter as well is that the room he is suggesting you use will be upstairs (do you want to lug your couch upstairs?) and may be too small to set up your couch for you to use it comfortably.

I agree with all the wise advice given already.

A few years ago I had a call from an American man who was in the area on business who demanded a Reiki massage. I told him I did not do massage but he would not give up. He rang a few times (had been enjoying the mini bar in his room I think), telling me that in America that he got Reiki massages all the time. I tried to be polite but professional and told him again that I wasn't qualified in massage. The final call came at midnight when he demanded to know when was I going to arrive at his motel!!!! At this point I put my husband on the phone who told him in no uncertain terms where to go lol! So, listen to your instinct and if he rings again just say no!

I totally agree with what the others have said. At the end of the day, your safety is far far more important than the money you would earn.

Regardless of which therapy we practise or where from, I think occasionally a client 'pops up' that we really don't feel comfortable about. If I feel instinctively that I don't want to treat that person, I often say something to discourage them or suggest an alternative therapy- or even say I'm booked up. Sometimes if I'm not sure, I see the person and always make certain that there are other people about and that they know the situation- and then what often happens is the appointment doesn't seem to go well- and they don't come back again!
I think we should trust our instinct every time- and if our doubts cause us to ask other people, then they're strong enough to not treat that person.
