I'm a big fan of smileys, because they can really change the tone of your email or forum post. In normal, face-to-face conversation, about 80-90% of our communication is non-verbal, but the internet has reduced our communication to letters and punctuation marks. You lose so much meaning when you limit yourself to simple characters.
Under other circumstances, a colon, hyphen and right-bracket strung together would be meaningless. But in the internet age, the is priceless - it helps people understand the tone of your post in the way you want them to. I must confess, I've even snuck a few smileys into my course work at school, and my professors never seem to mind!
