The Elderly

The last night I was at work, our manager had just come back from vacation. I was stocking items on the isle, and I was working with this older woman let's name her Mary that no one else wants to work with, because she doesn't actually DO any work, because she's all old and brittle; at least, I thought that's why no one wanted to work with her.

So, I'm packing boxes and unloading them, doing both of our share and trying to get it all done; which is cool, I understand that she's old. The thing is, she's really into this job and... I'm not. At all. I don't give a flying fuck about XYZ. I'm working here for the time being for another month before going back to the auto parts job that I will have soon. So she starts following me around, literally RIGHT behind me, so that if I step backwards, as I sometimes have to do when carrying heavy things, I will step on her and knock her down. And she complains about the way I'm unloading the truck.

It's not rocket science. You take the jars out of the box, and put them on the shelf with the label facing forward; that's it. So she follows me around for 8 HOURS doing that; and it starts to fuck with me, because she's purposefully in my way and I can't move backwards, and there are just certain times when you need to move backwards. And this whole time she's just bitching about how I'm not doing this job, that I can't make myself care about, the way that she wants it done. She's not a manager or anything, in fact, I'm unsure why she's working there, because if there's as much stuff wrong with her as she claims (and I'm sure there is) she should be able to get disability or something.

So anyway, that sucked and I thought I would share. I don't know what to do- I was eating buhisperone like candy on the breaks trying not to kill this old woman. Who wants to bitch out the elderly? What kind of dick does that make me?​

Well, I feel for you. I've been in that situation before and we call those types (not just the elderly) "dead wood".

You shouldn't feel bad for feeling the way you do, I know we're supposed to respect our elders and all but when they get to the point where they're just a pain in the ass. I often think they do that on purpose knowing full well what they're doing....

Here are some of MY beefs:
1) Driving. Ok, so you still have your licence but if you can't drive, get the fuck off the highway. I followed someone down mainstreet not long ago (ok, last summer lol) and I shit you not, they were doing 20 kph in a 50 zone. No, there was no traffic, no, they weren't looking for a parking spot. After we got past the main area, they picked it up to a whopping 40 kph.....
2) Using exact change at the checkout. WTF is it with the oldtimers? Not only ladies but men too. I shit you not, I was at shoppers drug mart one time and this L.O.L.'s total came to $4.97 and she was counting change from $2.00.....I looked at the cashier and she was rolling her eyes. She reached out to help the old lady count and the L.O.L swatted her hand away. Whe she got to $2.97 I put a twoonie down and the cashier rang it through...
3) The good old days: I had a customer who was harping on my pricing. I did an electrical job for him that a sparky would have charged $300 for and I only charged $125. He said "I used to pay electricans $10.00 an hour, no way they charge at least $50 now..." I said "Listen, when was that? 1970? That was when minimum wage was $2.00 an hour. Minimum wage is around $10.00 an hour now, so you were paying them 5 times minimum wage so at that ratio, you'd be paying them $50 an hour now.....I only charged you $25and I GAVE you a $30 GFI".....FUUUUCK.

It's not because she is ederly, it's because she is a prat. Plenty of ederly people do as much as they can and try not to criticize. Ageism is as bad as any other bigotry.

Been there before but I was raised to respect my elders. So I kept my mouth shut and I am glad I did. She retired the following year and whenever she visited, it was always a pleasant experience.

I'll tell you why 60 & up are still working. Their cumulated pensions are not enough. In addition, some elderly folks truly have nothing else to hold on to. It's not only a job, it's their social time or they would be isolated.

Keep in mind, there are older members on all these boards as well. It only becomes sad when they alzheimers, dementia, incontinence starts setting in. I was in a Tim Hortons (store one actually) Ottawa St & Dunsmure in Hamilton. There was an elderly woman sweeping the floor, I smiled while waiting we chatted turns out she was 74 needed to work because her children screwed her out of alot of money. I didn't know what to say, but I was saddened by her dilemma. I'm greatful that I had the opportunity to provide care for my parents in their time of need.

A great majority of this can be attributed to the health care industry keeping people alive too long with drugs and surgeries instead of allowing natural selection to take place.

Hug a senior daily if you can.
