This fall, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) will bring its therapeutic massage program to the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC). Instruction will be provided by a licensed massage therapist with 20 years of experience in the field, and 10 years teaching experience. Classes are set to begin in early October.
Therapeutic massage students can choose between registering for a six-month or a one-year program. In the six-month format, classes meet Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; students who select the one-year option will attend class twice a week Tuesday and Wednesday from 5-9:30 p.m.
SVCC partners with area businesses that allow students to practice clinical hours in an established professional environment. Following completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the national licensing exam to be licensed and governed by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
The therapeutic massage curriculum is fascinating and challenging. Students study anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathology, kinesiology, theory and assessment, ethics and general business practices. Students will complete clinical hours that will allow them to develop skills and techniques in a variety of massage modalities including sports massage, corporate chair massage, traditional Swedish and deep tissue applications.
Through SVCC partnerships with area businesses students will complete clinical hours in an established professional environment. Having in-field experience before graduation provides students a unique opportunity to graduate with added confidence and pathways to employment or building a private practice.
Massage is defined as the manipulation of the soft tissues (as by rubbing, stroking, kneading or tapping) with the hand or an instrument especially for therapeutic purposes.
Therapeutic massage has a rich history that spans its ancient holistic roots to today’s cutting edge health sciences, and is beneficial in the treatment of a multitude of medically related complaints, injuries, disorders and conditions.
The therapeutic massage industry is experiencing significant growth, with the U.S. Department of Labor estimating demand for professional therapists will grow at a rate of 3 percent per year through 2022. Therapists working full time work an average of 20 to 25 hours per week, with a median income of $39,000 in the state of Virginia.
