Tips for ubuntu 9.4 Newbie?

Hi Guys,
I am a user of windows for 4 years. Now i planned to install ubuntu as my second OS(dual boot). Since i am very familiar with windows softwares, i want to know what are good softwares for Ubuntu 9.4. Give me all the tips you know. For downloadin and surfin internet only, i am going to use Ubuntu.(Bcoz, in windows i get virus and spywares even if i use antivirus like avast etc. since i use torrent). So help me soon

The softwares i want are

A good download manager(like IDM,Orbit in windows)
A good Player(like KM,Gom,Media Player clasic and VLC in windows
A good torrent download client(Like utorrent in windows)


Also another help,
I tried ubuntu as live cd, today evening, the mp3 files and video files(avi,kmv,vob) files doesnt play in Ubuntu. It asked permission to download codec, i gave the permission but it doesnt download any codec. It says, Codec not found. How can i play mp3 and video files? ( i dont know whether sound is workin or not, since i cant play any media file). Where can i download the codec?

Anywho, i can give you loads and loads of really good apps to install:

Make sure that you install "Wine" - This let's you use a whole load of windows programs in linux.

To answer your question:
Media Player: VLC Media Player (it's avaliable in linux too)
Torrent Client: Ubuntu comes with "Transmission", but i think the standard Bittorrent client is avaliable for linux too
Instant Messenger: Empathy or aMSN

Now, about playing mp3's from the live cd - i dont think thaqt that'll work, mainly because it's running the os from the cd. The codec should be avaliable when you install it onto your hard drive, or onto a USB drive or something.

Try looking up "mp3" in synaptic, or "mp3 codec" in "Add/Remove" under "Applications"

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 6 Main Edition which is Ubuntu based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a feature called mint4win which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

You download the iso. image of Linux Mint 6 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use windows or Linux Mint.

Linux Mint can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive
