To advertise or not to advertise?

Hi everyone.


I'm after a bit of advice on how to get my Reflexology business up and running. Has anybody got their name in the yellow pages etc. Has this worked? Has word-of-mouth been more successful or is there a secret ingredient that I need to add to my "Look I'm Here!!" campaigne? I was thinking about getting a bit about me in the local news but what I don't want is a load of wierdo's with my telephone number because I have banded it around all over the place. (Maybe I am blowing the weirdo thing a little out of proportion!) What does everyone else think??

Hi Jane,
Just a quick couple of comments relative to my own personal experience.
I only work evenings and weekends at reflexology but have found by far the most successful method is word of mouth. It also works well with some sort of reduced introductory offer.
Yellow pages is ok but sometimes you have to wait months to get into it as it only is published once per year.
If you have a local paper then you can usually get some sort of write up or reduced advertising, again with some sort of voucher is useful.
I also find that contacts can be made at local Mind Body Spirit shows.
Another idea is to do some sort of talks to local groups that have members in your target range.

Hi there - Yup have to agree with Mike - word of mouth works brilliantly with Reflexology - all of my clients are recommended only - or through meant to be meeting & discussing leads to appointment but no advertising -
( hmmn apart from writing what i do here in HP )

I have been delighted with the word of mouth responce as it has worked out very well , especially as i felt the same as you do about advertsisng as partly I work from home & feeling not so confident I decided I only wanted peeps i know coming to the house, where there is a link - such & such knows such & such !

Silly really as i suppose many people do advertise & it works for them but anyway thats how i started & can honestly say i've never looked back & have a great clientele too.

hmmm word of mouth but I did do a local leaflet drop and local school evening shows to start.
Of course you have great clientele Pre - reflection of your good self.

I too would echo what has been said - particularly word of mouth and giving talks at local interest groups (WI etc.)

One thing that no-one has mentioned yet, that I got a very good response from, was I did a live, on air, Reflexology session on radio to a DJ. I was able to give out my contact details while I did the session (free advertising) and also left brochures at the radio station for anyone that wanted to send in for them.

Before I even got home, my wife had phone calls with people booking to come and see me!

crikey, waywood... never thought of that. was the dj ooohing and ahhing? <g>

i spend a lot of time trying to think of ways to market myself. the local paper is 30 quid for one week, which is a lot but then, i guess even 2 responses would make it worthwhile.

this is probably the best time of year to have an advertising rampage though... all that detoxing!
