Sgt Ryan Russell was killed in a hit and run this morning.

He was 35 and an 11 year vet.

Married with a young child.

Very tragic, there has to be another sad story with the driver as well.
Barefoot, stealing a snowplow and driving erratically at 5 am.

I have no doubt there's going to be a follow up story on the "tragic" life of this loser and how he's had it rough living on the street and how he stole the truck to keep warm.....while totally ignoring the fact that he killed a cop, damaged a bunch of people's cars, fucked up a small business owner's livelyhood and now is going to cost us all via medical treatment, a trial and incarceration (probably for 6 months only with double time off for time served awaiting trial).

And of course if he is black that will be a big issue as well.

I'm with you....as I've said many times before:

we have enough good people in this world we don't need people like this......I'm also up for hanging anyone who pushes or involves kids in the drug trade. I would support a law that states if anyone is caught providing drugs to, selling drugs to, or using kids to move drugs, it would be a do not pass go, do not collect $200.00 go straight to the gallows.....this would apply to anyone under 18. If someone is over 18? Give em all the drugs they want.....BUT they have to relocate to a place like oshawa, but have a barbed wire fence around it and no food or water goes in, just drugs.

With all the bad press the police have gotten lately maybe its appropriate to now acknowledge that they do a dirty and dangerous job so that most of us can sleep peacefully at night.

What a dreaded phone call that must be, hopefully the police reached the officers family before the media did.

It seems Canada has become more obsessied with punishing drinking and driving (which is a very serious crime) and speeding than gun crime, gangs and killers or terrorists who end up getting 2 or 3 to one sentences while their victims and families are impacted permanently.

Trying to understand what made him tick or to get to the root of his problems doesn't take away from the tragedy or the goodness of the police officer. It isn't all or nothing, we're able to hold more than one idea in our minds at a time.

I heard on a talk show today this waste at one point in his life was married with 2 kids. They reached his brother who hasn't had contact with him in over 2 decades.

It seems the police are also going to charge the plow operators with leaving their trucks idling which I'm not sure if that's fair.

^^^ the charge won't stick because you're allowed by law to leave your vehicle idling if the temp is below 10 deg C and above 20 (or something like that).

Auggie: I realize we're able to hold more than one idea in our heads at one time, but that isn't what this is. This is a case of blatant theft and causing the death of a police officer during a commission of a criminal act. IMO this should automatically warrant a swift and violent end (as demonstrated by the police shooting him 4 times). If there ever was a time FOR the death penalty, this is it. He stole a truck, damaged private property, killed someone and was caught in the act.

Who really cares why he did it? Who really cares if he was mentally unstable? (obviously he was). Who cares if he was high as a kite or drunk as a skunk? His motives are irrelevant. Finding out his history isn't going to bring the cop back or change a damn thing in our society. People will still do drugs, people will still drink to excess and those who are mentally incompetant are still going to roam our streets free.

True, knowing the roots of his problem won't bring the cop back and the dude was a piece of shit but does it diminish the fact the officer was a good cop and a young father and husband?

I don't think so, but I understand if people disagree. It's possible to discuss both without forgetting how tragic this must have been for them.
