Its quite possible that she is planning on using GTO releases, passive stretching, contract relax stretches, strengthening and gentle muscle stripping to ease the contractures. It definitely doesn't have to be aggressive. I have recently worked with a client with cerebral palsy and his response to GTO releases was immense. He would never be "cured" of his contractures though, he's had them since birth. If the elderly gentleman you're referring to has contractures caused by neurological deficit then it may work and it may not, depending on how he responds to it (and her technique of course) but its definitely worth a shot and definitely better than surgery! Surgery would be by far more painful.
Maybe that helps?
Also, you can always ask her (or get your friend to) what kind of techniques she'll (he??) be using to treat the contractures. Just a thought.
