Treating first paying client

Hi

I passed my Reflexology exam almost a year ago now in London, but had not really done anything with it in the past year due to lack of confidence, fear and being in the middle of emigrating to Canada.

I am now living in Canada and have been offered the use of a room at an Acupuncturist Clinic.

I have my first paying client to treat on Tuesday. I am absolutely petrified and doubting my abilities. My client also has had Reflexology for the past ten years, so they will be comparing me to experienced professionals.

Can anyone give me advice on how to stay calm and in control. How did anyone else feel when they treated their first client? I would love to hear of your experiences.

try and relax before the day, remember that you are qualified, if the person coming to see you has 10 years experience getting the treatment you would think she had found 'her therapist' by now, but she hasn't. She will know, as we all do, that each therapist has something different to offer. you can't really compare one with another.

you are professional and qualified and it's up to you as a therapist to give her a professional treatment....which does include being confident. even if you are not, pretend that you are. 'fake it till you make it' type thing.

i still get nervous treating even my own family and friends, i think that's natural as you want to please your clients.
take being nervous as a good thing, it shows you care and it will give you the adrenalin you need on the day. just take a few deep breaths to steady your hands.

i'm sure you will get loads of advice and stuff from people better qualified than I and you will do great.

Hi, I know how you feel - I was petrified when I had to see my first paying client - I kept thinking they'd ask me something I didn't know but it was fine once I started. I still get a bit nervous as I haven't really started my reflexology in the best economic climate and therefore haven't had that many clients really to build up much experience and confidence - however - I agree that you just have to fake it until you feel that confidence, also I use Bach Rescue Remedy to calm nerves. Good luck, i'm sure you'll be fine once you get started. Sx

Thank you both for your wise words and advice. Today went well, i was very nervous but once i was there i felt better. I actually ended up treating two clients one after the other! One of them has rebooked for next week. Yey!
