Treating people who have had a stroke...

A friend of mines' elderly grandmother had a series of severe strokes a couple of years ago and is pretty much bed ridden 24 hours a day. She is looked after at home, & cannot speak. It's really heartbreaking to be honest, but I was wondering what sort of things can be done reflexology wise, just to make her feel a little better in the day.

I know for the elderly, especially when frail, treatment times are kept to a minimum, perhaps maybe 10 to 15 mins on each foot. Strokes are contra-indications(?).., but as to what extent?

Has anyone treated stroke victims before, if so which areas did they concentrate on?

I'm currently on the ITEC course and hope to qualify in June, & I love it to bits

Why were you told that stroke was a contra-indication?

What was the rationale for that?

Ask your tutor the reasons for ANY conditions they say are "contra-indications".

Your tutor should be able to give you a reason. Not just because "it is".

I have a number of clients who have had strokes. Never had any problems.

Hear hear Patchouli! I too wish more tutors should give reasons for their statements.

I have been treating stroke victims for years. The one suggestion I would make is - treat them very gently. There is little point in doing a full-on reflexology treatment as most patients are extremely sensitive or the opposite, with little nerve sensation - so you wouldn't know if you were hurting them. I generally just do relaxation routines. I also include the hands - not reflexes, just relaxation moves - they love it. And, yes, just do short treatments at first, working up to longer routines as they become more used to it.

I work (as a staff nurse) sometimes in a stroke rehabilitation ward. How I would love to give them treatments! It is very frustrating! They would benefit so much.

I suppose the only difficulty someone could have is with getting permission from a client who has aphasia and/or dysphasia as a result of their stroke and cannot communicate. In that case I think relatives would have to be consulted.

Go ahead and treat your client. Take everyones invaluable advice and your client will be so much the better for the treatment.
