Treating those with dementia?

Hi guys,
A friend has just told me the are building a treatment room at the day centre where her mum goes, and wondered if I might be interested in going there. I think most of the clientele are elderly with varying degrees of dementia etc.
Do you think reflexology would help them? Are there any contraindications?
I've not long qualified and am still a little unsure of myself. But I may just give them a call...what have I got to lose?
Am I right in assuming that a lot of hospice work is voluntary?

Are you an AoR member? There is some very good advice on their website in the members' area about a range of different conditions.

You need to think about whether you feel strong enough to work with people who have dementia as it can be very challenging and distressing. Would you have the support of staff at the centre and perhaps access to counselling yourself? Would you feel confident treating clients at the centre? When I was a student of reflexology I worked at a centre for people with a whole host of mental health problems, and I found it very rewarding and enjoyable. The staff were wonderfully supportive and I found it a positive and uplifting environment. Ask the questions and see how you feel about the place, and don't be afraid to say no if you think it's not for you. It may well be a voluntary post, though this is no bad thing.
