Hi all
Well just got home today from work opened my mail and what a surprise the hospital has cancelled my op for my discectomy that was due to be Monday.
After all the running around trying to organise everything as I have a partner and 2 children I'm gutted, I rang them to ask a reason all they could say is that they wasn't sure but the surgeon may have took his annual leave great ay how rude
So looks like I will be waiting until at least July now as they said there is slot for me the end of next month but that's no good for me as we fly to Florida in June and there is no way I will be recovered by then, makes me so mad been waiting so long only to have to wait even longer, anyone else had the same experience.

Hi Jan,

They're always cancelling appointments a friend of mine had an appointment for surgery that was cancelled a while back - he was very disappointed. I suppose you can blame the cuts in spending.

When I started nursing about x years ago (post leech!) the bed occupancy was aimed to be around 80 -85%. As Earthbabe says - its now expected to run at minimum of 100% - hence hot bedding (patients waiting in day room for another to be discharged) etc etc. Not only does it mess up patients plans when there are cancellations but I am sure it has implications for care in a range of ways - including the time to properly clean a bed space etc.
Whilst I am all for sensible use of resources, it seems to me this now is at the expense of the patient and their well-being.
If you are able to make alterations in your availability with say 24hrs notice - it might be worth contacting the consultants secretary to say so. I know that may not be possible as you have children, but its just worth a thought.
No doubt there is a "reason" (aside from the surgeon/ bed availability) why you shouldn't have your op right now but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.
