Undercover raid on Stamford massage parlor ends with prostitution arrest

STAMFORD — Following up on complaints about sexual favors being purchased at at a Hoyt Street massage parlor, city police late Thursday afternoon arrested a Flushing, New York woman on a prostitution charge.


Capt. Richard Conklin said an undercover police officer showed up at the Phoenix Wellness Therapy center at 23 Hoyt Street Thursday afternoon and booked a massage. But after a sex act was agreed upon and was about to commence the officer called for backup and charged a worker there with prostitution.


Conklin said the call was made for the back up officers to come in at 5:40 p.m. The officers already had a search warrant and seized $1,280 in cash. The worker arrested was one of three women offering massages on Thursday and two other men associated with the massage parlor were also in attendance.


Conklin said Phoenix has a state license to offer massages and he was unaware of how many other licensed massage establishments there are in Stamford.


Laws over the past 10 or so years have made it more difficult for houses of prostitution to front as massage parlors, Conklin said. He said some complaints were made anonymously and some came from neighbors annoyed by the large amount of foot traffic coming and going from the premises, sparking concerns about the legitimacy of the enterprise.
