Hi everyone

Just thought I's say hi as I'm new to the site and newly qualified (VCTC level 3)

Wondered also if anyone can help as I am a little confused. I have recently been asked to do a reflexology session on a 72 year old lady who is very fit and well except for having varicose veins to both legs. Are varicose veins a contra indiction for a treatment or not? I am getting mixed messages from any literature I read and am unable to contact my old tutor for reasurance.

Any advice would be appreciated as being newly qualified and flying solo is a little daunting

Hi

As far as i am aware varicose veins are only a local contra-indication and treatment can be carried out. Just don't work directly over them. Remember to work the heart area, this will stimulate clood circulation

I agree with the previous reply - just avoid area and work on the client's general health aspects. If you are doing a massage this applied also but you could skim over (extremely lightly) the area with the massage oil/cream so the client felt the treatment was complete.
All people benefit - it would be a shame if this client was missed out.

Agree with comments re local contra indicator and provide a complete treatment via light touch over area - have experience of a client (young) with the problem and she benefits immensely from a full body treatment, but will very very light coverage of areas affected

I would also agree, but if in doubt and also depends on the severity get confirmation from GP. There is a great website called [link=http://www.findareflexologist.com]www.findareflexologist.com[/link] - lots of reflexologists are on there, and also on the main page they have great advice from experts - reflexology and cancer, reflexology and pregnancy, reflexology and infertility, reflexology and IBS, etc, if you join £30 per year if I remember rightly you can gain access to other forums like this and they may have specific professionals on there who can help you further. Alternatively I think you can just 'lurk' at your leisure and read through the posts.
But when in doubt don't treat - or get GP just to confirm it is not severe, and avoid the area if they are happy for you to treat. Ask if she has had any history of problems with the V V too.
