VTCT Aromatherapy Course

Hello, not sure if this will be the right forum for this (Mod's please move to the correct one, sorry for any inconvenience).

I am interested in the above course that starts at my local Institute in September, and I would like to know if anyone is doing this at the mo, I need to knowhow many and what oils are being studied. Reason being, I'm not sure I can afford to get the whole kit in 1 go, so will prob purchase a few at a time.

Have you spoken to any one in the department that runs the course? They should know the number of oils being used. When I did a course back in the dark ages, we used 9 - but the list has probably grown since then!

Hi I know you have now found the site, but I am studying the same course and we study about 30 oils. At college we use their oils, but for practising and case studies etc at home we have to use our own. So even though they say you must purchase the kit before you start there really is not a need and there are several shows you could go to to pick up the oils at a reasonable price.

Depends which VTCT AT course you are doing.
There are at least 30 for the AT massage Dip (more for beauty therapists) and 40+ for the Advanced AT Dip (more clinical). Unfortunatley neither can let you automatically/fully join the Aromatherapy Council (AC) for voluntary regulation: bridging courses are needed. Nor do the VTCT require 1st aid and business modules which could almost complete the AC's requirements.
For oils: If you look on the QCA - 'skills for life' data base you can see which oils are to be used for the National Occupational Standards...although some do not exist! (This is me having a grumpy old woman episode...EG Jasmine by enfleurage: not the norm for oil production...only if you are a millionaire and have your quaint farm in S France; and Sandalwood - endangered: only 1/3 of the world's demand produced ethically last year and none the previous year; methinks the perfume industry would snap this up so what ends up in the bottle is a mystery to me).

Hi there -I am doing this course at my local college, we are using, studying and learning about 20 oils for our case studies and practicals in the college, however we also have to learn an additional 10 oils and write our findings etc. So in all yes you will learn about 30 oils and use the 20 - I can give you the list of this years oils we are using, howeve the VTCT can change the oils, in all my oils cost me approx £100. Some companies can offer special packages and include carry cases with the oils, so its best to have a shop around and see which company is best for you. I did some market research and the difference in prices was amazing, I would steer to a company who can supply you with organic and have theethics that you can trust.

Please let me know if you wantme to supply the list of oils.

I lovemy aromatherapy course and its opened up so much more to me than I can imagine.

IMO what a waste of money. I teach aromatherapy to above the so called NOS and my students receive a diploma to practice and full insurance.

We self regulate ourselves without joining the AC and do not wish to do so.

With regards to the oils, yes your tutor will tell you the ones you need. Pindy hasgot it about right.

I absolutely agree, but now find that if I want to work in a hospital or hospice, I have to be a member of the Aromatherapy Council (as well as the Reflexology Forum and the new body for massage, whatever that is called).

Thanks for all your replies, I do know that this particular course doesn't involve massage, apparently my tutor said we can do Diploma in Aromatherapy without massage, think it covers just the basic and not full massage, and I have a list of the 30 oils thank you (got it from VTCT site)

Hi, i did this course last year, we used eve taylor oils kits which have i think 30 oils but some girls bought the bigger one, my kit (30) was £50 something and ive added other oils to it since.

My course was a year and we did the whole body massage, all the oils, contraindications, safety, case studies.....

It was a wonderful course and the teacher was fab!!

I don't know about other courses but the VTCT aromatherapy course involves massage.

If your aromatherapy course does not involve massage, then you are missing out on a very important method of administering the oils, not to mention the additional treatment potential.

In regard to the number ofoils purchased, students do not need to buy any because the learning centre should provide them for use there....although this is often easier said than done.

Also, studentson the VTCT aromatherapy course do notneed to show usage but rather their understanding of how to use them safely and effectively (according to the assessment book)....and let's faceit on most college run courses these days how easy would it be for students to honestly get through30 oils or more and show properusage?....there just isn't the time.

You should be learning massage on your course- otherwise how are you going to know what you are doing? As for the oils - its easy to use them in your class and case studies, that is if you are blending and are required to do case studies.

Glad you got things sorted, I would say to be wary of buying oils well i advance of the start as some do not last as long, you may be best to get them just as you're starting to use and appreciate them, or you'll need to replace some. With respect to buying a few at a time, it's not the mos efficient way. You are probably best to put a few pounds a week aside and open an account as a trainee / therapist / business - have a look in the following threads:

You might find that an oil which costs you £5 in the shops can cost as little as £1.25 with some of these suppliers - and the quality is good.

It may be that you don't need massage as a prerequisite, but there are few courses where a full massage routine is not taught..

Will you be learning any massage?
The Aromatherapy massage is totally different to fullbody massage.
