My schedule has been having some openings here and there so I have been thinking about helping some folks in need. However, I do not want to extend this to any current clients.

Any suggestions on where to get these people? I really want to work on a few who really could benefit from bodywork and are in a financial bind.

When I took a pregnancy massage class, the instructor mentioned that unwed pregnant teens can really use the care, physically & emotionally. Also, you can agree to work with them a few months post partum if you wish, but it's kind of a temporary arrangement. (Not like someone you might feel obligated to treat for years.)

I don't know how this fits in with your type of work. Hope to hear a lot of good suggestions.

There was a great article a while back in one of the massage magazines about a woman who came into a lot of money selling her yahoo stocks and now works with poor but I think she's traveling the world, I'm sure if you do a search you'll find the article. Here's the site of a different woman who also works with the homeless in San Fransisco. Even if you don't want to specifically work with the homeless, she can probably give you advice on with whom to speak within the bureaucracy of welfare or how to contact and speak with the grassroots groups.

Possibly the "Dress For Success" group would have some women who are in dire need of massage.

I see you are in PA. Here is a list of their locations there, in case you want to speak to someone closer to you:

• South Central PA

I also suggest this as a great group to give items to. I heard an interview with a volunteer from our local group and she mentioned that if you don't have something to donate, they can always use black handbags.

  It looks like the Bell Family Shelter is no stranger to people donating. Yours would be a little different, in offering massage instead of proceeds, but I bet they'd be a great place to start.

Wow puuppi! You did some serious googling!

One year a friend of mine put together a program to donate massage to some women via the abuse shelter. I remember doing one massage from that.

I did seriously think about contacting someone for the men and women who may have just recently returned from military duty over seas. Do you think the Veterans Affair could work with me? Or just a local army base?

Great stuff! Getting the brain going!

I'd think you could contact Vetern's Affairs or a local army base, but you may do better talking to the Army base and ask if you can be "listed" somewhere for men and women coming home who need care.

My boyfriend works for the Dept of Veteran Affairs. We had talked about me going to the office after they were finished on group days. I never did it.
Juts letting you know from my experience with what he has told me. You will deal with plenty of issues,emotional ones and physical ones. Some of these guys "lose it" on the whim. PTSD takes its toll on them.
