Wars and Religions

I was just reading some article over the net. Author of the article was claming most of the wars starting point is religion. I kind of agree with the author of that article. Religion is the one of the reasons for the war. But I don't think we can make religion is the main for the wars. What do you think?

Religions causes lots of problems, but it is not the main reason for all wars. I don't even know why people needs religion. It is all about controling mass population, nothing more.

The fact religion causes many wars is a myth. Most wars are fought over land, money, politics, natural resources or other tangible assets.
In the old days many wars were fought over food and in Africa that's still the case in some countries

Yep. Religion is an excuse, but the primary reason for war is the control of resources. From the genocide of the Cathars to the annexation of Europe by Hitler, it has always been about the increase of wealth.

By masking the naked causes of most wars (land, power territory, money) in the 'higher' causes of religion, it makes it easier to gain the support of the majority and the weak-minded
For example the Crusades were at their root, about removing the Turks from the trading routes to China, but there's no way as many people would have joined if that had been the only stated reason. The religious leaders used religious language to fire people up and join. Also, most of the knights and men-at-arms who joined didn't have property (which was the primary form of status) and saw an easy opportunity, that wasn't dependant on family ties, to get it

History has shown that religion is a means of control over the masses. It allows taxes, control of behavior, and the elimination of personal decision. The public must follow a code of conduct or else dire consequences follow in this life and for eternity.

People in power often want more power, they go to war to obtain this additional power.

Falsifying a religious substance for the war is a convenient mechanism to have the masses stand in agreement and then stand in silence as the bodies of their children are returned. We are always on the side of God, they are always the heathen race.

If God was not invoked by those waging war, they could not control their people, there would be an eruption of civil war from parents asking why their most cherished son had to die.

So, religion is often named in war, but it is a device of domestic politics and pacification, not the reason.
