Was it the Tory's who introduced Incapacity Benefit, when they were last in power?

I thought they used Incapacity Benefit to hide the real unemployment figures.

Think it was introduced by John Major MP. He also very sensibly allowed those of us with Company Pensions to start drawing them from age 50. I've been doing that for 20 years and bad news for the Pension Fund will probably still be doing it in another 20 years. My auntie Ruth died only a few weeks ago at age 98. My mum went a few years ago at 91. Looks like I'm stuck here for a while yet.

But at least I don't have to go for benefits - not yet.

There's a guy on TV - think his name is STARKY or some such, a historian type. Saw him on Question Time. If ever there was a person to destroy the Tories in power, it's him. This total bastard wants to withdraw all benefits, no matter what, from the people he calls the 'undeserving poor'.

Bad nooze STARKY - you are probably on a dozen death lists already. Don't go out without an escort of goons. Certainly not to the East End.

His creep wants to take away my LONDON FREEDOM CARD.

That is the problem with the political situation in this country. It is all based on lies and deception, slight of hand, smoke and mirrors. The people are basically very very stupid, as well as being sickeningly servile and the government treat the situation accordingly. The people need to stop accepting lies within their own parliament. Parliament has been allowed to become a filthy parasite infested toilet of self interest......It no longer serves in the interests of this country or its people. Every body knows it. But few have the courage to speak out. It will not change until the people demand change, and stop voting for the lib lab con. Parliament needs to be be de loused. disinfected in every filthy corner. the sooner the clean up starts the better.

Incapacity Benefit was originally introduced to replace Invalidity Benefit and Sickness Benefit in 1995 under John Major's Conservative administration.

There have been several theories, rumours, and urban legends about the use of non-employment based benefits to massage the unemployment figures. As the figures are based on the number of unemployed who are claiming benefit and available for work the long term sick or disabled would never have been counted in the figures, no matter the title of the benefits claimed.

Yes. They did. If you remember they also introduced cutting bed numbers in hospitals and then graduated to just cutting the number of hospitals. That helped them to increase the number of weeks you would wait for an operation or even to see a consultant. That way more people died of their illness or incapacity as they called it. The same will happen this time as well. After all the "Big Society" and the "pay your fair share" policies of this coalition government is just a carry on from all that. Remember the "back to basics" from John Majors time as PM. That was the era when lots of old people froze to death and starved. Now we see it happening again on an even larger scale than Labour was already practising before they lost the election. Just awful too that the lib/dems have gone back on all their principles just for a taste of power, but then they didn't have any sensible ones anyway.

Real point is that these plss ants aren't any better than what we had before for the last 4 or 5 decades and if you believed in even one of them when they were running for election then I pity you. Even a dog if you beat it enough times will not come anywhere near you and to our politicians that is just what we are. When will the UK public wake up and realise for once and all that you can't believe anything our politicians say or let alone promise?
