It is against the law to operate a property rental business without a permit. I bet there are also zoning laws that prevent this.
I can see both sides of the issue:
The owners who occasionally rent out their cottage to make a little extra dough. I don't see anything wrong with that as long as the people they rent too are decent and quiet.
I see the rental business owners getting pissed off due to lost revenue. They pay extra insurance and have to maintain their rental properties, pay business tax, etc
I can REALLY see the neighbour's POV because I bet most of them come up north for some peace and quiet and then buddy next door rents his cottage out to a bunch of college kids who party it up every weekend with tunes cranked, drunks passing out, tossing beer bottles into the woods etc.
I also don't have a problem with kids yelling and screaming in the water all day, occasionally. But if you're renting to different people every weekend this could go on all summer. Who wants that?
Some friends of mine who have a place on a lake up here and I go hang out with them sometimes. You can tell when the people across the lake have their grandkids up because you can hear them screaming and yelling all afternoon. Kind of ruins the tranquility of the area. My friends say that they don't mind because the kids are only up 2 or 3 times a summer. That'd be fine with me too but if it was every weekend? nope, sorry, that'd be a royal pain in the ass......
You couldn't legally rent it before.......
