Remember those movies on pathshala, in which would reside along with the family of the teacher and do all the household chores and, sometimes, even offer ‘seva’ to their master? (Well, mostly out of respect.) Now, such a thing would be deemed impossible in urban Indian schools nowadays, but in rural areas, there have been instances of teachers taking undue advantage of the students.

One such incident came to light when a video from a school in Chhattisgarh went viral.

In the video, posted by the news agency ANI, a schoolteacher is seen lying on the floor, face down, as three students gave him massage. The three class 10 students of a government school in the state’s Jashpur district were seen massaging the teacher’s feet and back, while one of his colleagues shot the video.

The 20-day-old video went viral on Tuesday (August 31) and the schoolteacher, identified as Anup Minj, faced the wrath. Minj said he had initially approached one of his colleagues ‘Mathur Sir’ to give him a massage as he was not feeling well that day. However, he clarified that it was Mathur Sir who assigned the task to three students later.

“I was very ill that day. I didn’t call any children. I requested one of our staff Mathur Sir to give me massage. He gave me massage. He called two-three students and asked them to give me massage. They were students of class 10. This took place 20 days ago,” he added.

The incident, which took place in Tumla Higher Secondary School, clearly shows how other teachers present in the staff room have fun teasing Minj. One of them even jokingly said that she would definitely send it to show what Minj has been doing.

On discovering that the video went viral, a shocked and defiant Mathur told ANI, “There are many good things here which do not become viral, but these small things get viral.”

One of the students, said Minj, was very ill, adding they gave him massage out of respect.

Well, it certainly does not matter what led to this incident, what matters is how we still carry on medieval practices in the 21st century.
