WESTBOROUGH --- Nestled along the westbound side of Route 9, Spatech Institute provides state-certified training in aesthetics and massage while offering area residents quality services at a significant discount.
Spatech, which was established in 2001 through the merger of the Headhunter II School of Cosmetology and the Polarity Realization Institute, has been operating in Westborough since 1996. The Polarity Realization Institute was founded in 1976 by Nancy Risley, who still leads the school today. With a special focus on polarity therapy, the institute is well positioned to help its graduates find work in the booming med-spa industry. Spatech has four locations: Ipswich and Plymouth, MA, Westbrook, ME and Westborough.
"Polarity has to do with the chakras, and the energy systems in the body," Marie Corey, assistant site manager said. "It's a holistic approach to bodywork, working with the energy systems in the body."
Corey said that the institute offers several courses of study, including a 600 hour aesthetics program, a 650 hour therapeutic massage program and a 770 hour holistic massage program with polarity therapy.
"Students come and seek us out because of the polarity therapy, which is a part of everything we do," she said. "Even in our skin care program, it applies to overall health and well-being."
"We are seeing a real uptick in the medi-spa," instructor Wil Clapper said. "They need people with the 600 hour aesthetician license, which is a program we offer."
Corey said that the program is a blend between classroom learning, hands on training with peers and clinical hours.
"One of the things that we do is we ask our aesthetics students to stop shaving," Corey said. "They need to be able to learn what it feels like to have a wax, and to see if that is something that they like doing."
In order for students to complete their clinical hours, Spatech offers a student run clinic for the public where clients pay only for the materials used. A signature facial is $30, with an additional $10 to $25 charge for optional products and services and a one hour massage is $30. Appointments must be made in advance by calling 508-366-8437.
Corey said that the majority of students at the Westborough location study aesthetics. According to the consumer information on the company's website, 68 percent of the aesthetic students were employed in their field within one year of graduation. The comprehensive fee for the program is $10, 237, which covers all materials and textbooks, with the exception of the required white pants and shoes. Financial aid is available, Corey said.
Data for the massage and polarity therapy programs was not available because the school had fewer than 10 graduates in those programs during the 2014-2015 academic year.
Clapper said that the three programs typically take between eight and nine months to complete. Programs are offered on a full time basis (three eight hour days per week), part time basis (three nights per week) and a mothers' hours class, which meets from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
Classes are starting later this month, as well as in late March/early April. Classes also begin in September.
Corey said that Spatech, which is located at 227 Turnpike Road, will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, February 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The open house will feature makeup applications, paraffin hand treatments, skin analysis and mini polarity sessions and chair massages.
"It's an opportunity for the public to come in and see what we offer, as well as for potential students to check us out," Corey said.
