What Anime show would you suggest for a newbie?

I have never watched any Anime before but I would like to start.

What show or movie would you suggest to ease me into the genre?

i'd suggest something like tenchi universe or fruits basket. both of which are not very long (only 26 eps each) and have a fairly linear plotline. i'm a huge dragonball z fan, but it's also 300 episodes and that's fairly daunting for a new anime watcher. it really depends on what you're into. you will also run into the question of watching dubbed vs. subtitled. dubbed will be easier for you initially...but in general most fans by far prefer subbed.

I suggest you watch digimon first. Ok, bad idea to many people cuz they think it's for kids but that's totally wrong. It's actually ok.

Or, if you want to, you can watch anime like Skip Beat, Cyborg 009 or Naruto. They are really good

If you like that then maybe start with naruto, but don't watch shippuden (Like after 3 years) until you have read bleach. You should also mix in some shoujo like vampire knight

Anyways, I suggest you watch Death Note. It's not my favorite, but it's the best anime to start mostly anyone off. Definitely.

Other anime that I personally recommend are Bleach, One Piece, Soul Eater, D. Gray-man and Gintama.

It's depends on the kind of stuff you like as anime itself isn't a genre; it has action, fantasy, horror etc.
the first anime i saw was detective conan but i didn't follow it I just watched it now and again.
the first anime i finished was probably naruto (a boy who is an outcast tries to become the ultimate ninja) but the following are all good animes as well:
bleach - talks about death-gods, has a lot of fighting, some comedy
one piece - a boy who wants the ultimate pirate treasure, some people have weird powers because of eating the devil fruit
full metal alchemist/FMA: brotherhood - a world where alchemy is studied as a science, 2 boys fight to regain their original bodies (slightly complex to explain)
death note - a super intelligent boy finds a notebook, if you write anyones name in the notebook they die
avatar: the last airbender is ok as well - a boy who can control all four elements trying to stop tyranny and war (it's not Japanese though, english)

these are just some animes there are loads more just explore different things and see what you like

i agree with strawberry milk, death note is a highly addictive anime that gets alot of people into watching anime. multiple friends of mine who had never realy watched anime are now hooked on it and watching heaps now =D

I'd Try somethingg well known and easy to follow like 'Naruto' Or 'Tokyo Mew Mew,(Mew Mew Power) or D.N Angel

Also Loveless is a short and easy Anime to watch.

Naruto, and then Naruto Shippuden (two and a half years later). Naruto was the first anime I ever watched, and the reason why I got into anime. I couldn't stop watching, lol, I got totally addicted. I would also recommend Death Note and Bleach. Fruits Basket would also be a good anime to start with. ^_^

DN ANGEL - romantic with some action, quite funny too
W.I.T.C.H - its kinda anime, its got magic and action and romance in.

all these are in english so its easier. =]
