What are your favorite business courses/books?

We've decided that rather than overloading myself trying to build up my clientele, only to have to stop working with them after a few months (due to my own pregnancy, not theirs), it will be good for me to focus for a while on other things regarding the business- like getting our "system" tight and smoothly running. Does anyone have any recommendations for books/CE classes (or "non"-CE classes)/online courses that really helped them to jump start their business management skills? I *think* we're doing pretty well in many areas, but I am sure that there is still quite a lot to learn.

What do you recommend? Financial stuff? Marketing? "Business management"?..... What's helped you get off well with your business? What changed the course of history for you, in a positive way?

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy! Here's to a happy and healthy pregnancy - and a happy healthy baby!

I've just joined an office with someone who is has been in the business for over 8 years. They've done a lot of courses from BodyWorkBiz.com - they have several courses - most send an e-mail once a day to your inbox. So far, I've found some really good ideas from the binders they created. They are non-CEU courses. So far I'm reading the 60 clients in 60 days and 260 ways to fill your practice - there is also 101 marketing ideas. I would start with one and see if it fits your needs. There were some really good ideas in the 260 ways...and in the 101 marketing.

That's just a start - I'm working on my marketing strategies myself. I'll be interested in other sources people suggest.

I have posted before on Michael Port's "Book Yourself Solid" book. While not specifically for MT's, it contains a lot of extremely useful information on improving your practice.

I have to second the "Book Yourself Solid" recommendation- in fact, I think it is Walt to whom I owe a thanks for turning me on to that. It is not your run of the mill marketing book- more like a workbook from a service industry perspective. I just got if from my local library for the second time, and am planning to actually buy it in the very near future.

Just keep a text-file log of tasks completed. (or on the calendar if you aren't always up and running on the computer.) I second (third?) the "Book Yourself Solid" recommendation.

What are your favorite business courses/books?

Does anyone have any suggestions for "how to set up and run the business smoothly without killing your husband" type books? We need to get things running so that either of us can know in an instant what the other did when they weren't in the office.

When I first started my business I had 3 treatmentment rooms. I couldn't afford to pay someone to maintain the front desk and answer phones. My husband spent many Saturdays at my shop answering phones, changing out linens, getting wash going, folding sheets, etc. It was not his choice of things to do on a Saturday but he never complained about helping me out. Almost 5 years later, he's done his time and I can now afford a receptionist. She's only there on Fridays and Saturdays as these are our busiest days. All our rooms are full and we are actually turning people away.

Forgive me, I just realized I'm rambling. I tend to do that. Anyway, I could not have done it without his help. He wanted to see me succeed.
I'm thankful!

"Business Mastery" and "Success Beyond Work" - both were instrumental in the early days of my practice.
