What can I do after completing my IHM Level 3?

Hello all,

I'm a new poster annd was wondering if you lot would be able to offer me some advice. I am currently completing my level 3 certification in IHM (studies will be finished in January) and I am also doing a reflexology course. Both are running side by side with a fulltime hairdressing course, I am a busy lady at the moment as I also have a young son and a out of work boyfriend to look after.

However my question is what are the opportunities open to me once I finish my IHM course?

I was thinking of starting a small business incorporating all my skills (hairdressing and holistic)and I also hope to take further holistic course in the next academic year. But I was also considering teaching IHM. What steps would enable me to do this?

If anyone as got any advice it would be gratefully recieved

Hi Ifrhodes,

Starting your own business using all your skills is a good idea. The only problem is generally that business builds up slowly, but if you keep at it you will get there. Business link offer great free advice on setting up.

On the teaching side I suspect you will need more experience before starting to teach. I run a reflexology school and had to have been practicing for more than 5 years before I started the school. However, I would suggest you contact you local college or ask at the college you are currently studying at and find out what their requirements are. You will need a teaching qualification but often you can take that once you have started work.

Steady on about the teaching, you haven't even qualified yet. Get some experience behind your belt first. Then prehaps start thinking about teaching. Two years of IHM would be adequate, then prehaps go on a adult/further education training course, which is layered in about 3 levels.

I always thought that hairdressing with IHM was a good combo. How about holistic hairdressing with organic and natural products with the IHM.

Can't help with the 'teacher bit' (other than agreeing with the others that you need some experience first) but can tell you that my hairdresser also incorporates head massage in her treatments. I can't wait to see her once every 6 weeks - she does about 15/20 mins of head massage first, then washes and cuts my hair. For some clients, she just does the IHM - but I like the two together - it's bliss!

The teaching is a long term goal really not something I'm thinking of right now,its just that I have had such a strong emotional reaction to IHM and have fallen totally in love with it so at some point I would like to share my fellings with others.

I have (strangely enough) spoken to Business Link today, I worked for them before I had my son so I know how helpful they can be, that said I also know that holistics are not always something they specialise in and can sometimes put up barriers so I was interested to find out how other people had gone about starting their businesses and progressing once they had qualified.

So any tips or advice would be much appreciated
