Patients sounds too clinical. Many people try out comp treatments as an alternative to GP so lets not remind them of it.

I call them my clients, or my people (gosh, that makes me sound like a head of state or something ). I don't like to use the term patients because I'm not a doctor or nurse, though I know therapists who do use it. You have to watch it a bit calling people clients, because it does have exciting connotations. Oh well.

About the excitement -- it helps to be 60-something -- or you might try posting a photo of one of the grand dames of reflexology, such as Eunice Ingham, perhaps Seriously, I never use the term "massage". In fact, in many places in the USA, massage therapists now have to be fingerprinted as well as licensed in order to distinguish them from, um, other vocations. Fortunately, for reflexology treatment there is no need to disrobe, so we usually can escape from that requirement!

As for the topic, here in the States we are very careful -- our FDA has persecuted people in the past for "practicing medicine without a license" and such. So "patients" is a no-no unless you're at least a chiropracter or within a government-licensed health treatment facility. I do hope the rest of the world doesn't import ALL our social issues

I also call mine clients, to call them patients does medicalise it a bit.

I allow my mum to call them my patients because I then can explain to her more easily that I really cant tell her all the info on them, (she is a very "interested in people" person) and doesn't quite get the confidentiality angle. Bless.

Thanks all for the replies, think this may have been a little misunderstood - obviously I call my customers by their names too but I was interested in what you called them when they are not in the rooom!
What I should have said was fill in the missing word

I call them clients or by their name. However I work voluntarily at a cancer care centre where there are ex nurses. There is a push (from them) to call them patients but I suspect they are being a bit precious. Those of us who have not been nurses seem to be outside of the club!!
I agree that people who come to us are trying to get away from traditional medicine.
Just as an aside, I am mightily impressed by the words of wisdom which accompany other messages!!

They are "clients".
As for first names, that's what I use, unless they introduce themselves as "Mr(s) X". I also ten dto intoriduce myself by my first name only the frist time we meet.
Helly, do your clients call you "Mrs ..."?
