One thing that does come to mind is that this board used to flog itself far more in online directories. Getting back to that might not be a bad idea, especially since the 'red place' has more search gravity. I'm not really a partisan for either place, but given that red is older and bigger, and that there is natural turnover in posters, it kind of makes sense for blue to be a little more proactive, IMHO. (Or blue will die of incest.)

Flog itself means that I'd stumble across online ads for the place. I think there's a lot less of that now. I wouldn't really know, as I'm a SC guy who does some window shopping (mostly after clicking on links in threads).

How a board dies of incest is simple. If you're not the biggest player in an area, you simply have to be more proactive about poaching new users. Any bigger player will have more 'search gravity' (more eyeballs will get shunted there 'just cuz') plus, when it comes to message boards, and mailing lists, busy with good signal to noise begets more busy (often with worse signal to noise). Note: There is actually an opportunity there as less busy with better signal to noise can be leveraged against bigger if you can maintain the better signal to noise ratio. 'Death by incest' comes into play just because of the life cycle of posters. Most start as lurkers / information scavengers, then get lured into regular posting (or hyper posting), then eventually taper back down to a semi-lurker status or go away. When you don't have the natural advantage being the biggest player, with that life cycle in mind, eventually a place becomes dominated by a cadre of ever less frequently posting 'forum hillbillies fornicating with each other'.

Once you hit that stage, you need proactive action or an epic turn of luck to get things back of a growing and flourishing trajectory. edit: Because nothing scares people like a bunch of forum hillbillies diddling each other. The goal it to draw lurkers and convert them into quality posters. This place hasn't hit that point, but it is possible. massageplanet actually has a lot going for it, not the least of which is that this place isn't 'the place that hate built' or 'the isle of the damned', it's it's own, largely positive, entity.
