Here's one to ponder - if the following three American-owned and operated businesses did not exist in San Jose: the Del Rey Hotel/Blue Marlin Bar, Sportsmen's Lodge, and Zona Blue - would you still consider it worthwhile going there as a mongering destination?

Yes, because there are many other massage parlors, New York Bar and other venues......In fact, even now, I rarely go to any of the places you mentioned.

While there's no doubt that everything in San Jose is better because of the three businesses you mentioned, I would still go even if they did not exist. Today. Two years ago however I would have considered all three venues indispensable.

ZB: The nicest MP in town, but also among the most expensive.

SL: I love it for its atmosphere more than its amenities. It's the one business that made me pause to think before writing this. MY SJ experience wouldn't be the same without the Sportsmen's, but somehow I think I'd survive.

KL/HDR/MB - To the best of my knowledge, all three businesses are owned by the same guys, so if the HDR were gone, you'd also have to take the Key Largo and Monkey Bar out of the picture. It wouldn't really make too big a difference for me, as some other American enterpreneur would fill the void.

My answer: Yes, but without those 3 places, I think I would grow tired of SJO after a while, and I'd be spending much more time on the Pacific coast.

When I first went to SJO not one of those 3 places existed. There were Happy Days, NYB, KL, Park Hotel, Nashville South, Big Nashville, Piano Bar, Arte Sauna, 747, etc. Many mongering places.

No Colombians, few Nicas, lots of Ticas. Much lower prices.

Not only was a mongering destination in my opinion was better.

Interesting - which begs the question: as much (mostly well-deserved) praise as these venues get here on the board, has the overall effect of their presence actually been positive? And come to think of it, you can throw Kamur - owned by three different Americans over the past four years - into the mix as well.

Granted, my knowledge of other locales is limited, but I doubt if there's currently any other mongering destination around the world where American-owned businesses play such a prominent - even dominant - role in the overall scene (at least with the tourist mongers).

The DR is the main reason that i go to CR.If it were not open i would still go to CR but less frequently.I'm making my third trip in 5 months because i'm hooked on those chicas from the DR.(they are gorgeous)

I would LOVE IT! With none of those gringo magnets around can you imagine what the prices would be? Even the hotels would probably be cheaper. Sure, not as many high end girls and virtually no Colombianas. But imagine having some hottie START at $40 and work her way down

Yes I would. DR was there when I started but actually never hung out there very much after my first trip. Even now I go in the morning for espresso and chat with Jessica and leave.

Only ZB would make a difference to me. MOST of my times in CR I haven't even walked into either of the other two establishments...

SL I really enjoy the atmosphere, but I just don't see a reason to go there unless I'm staying there...

DR/BM.... I don't particularly like going there...



IF ZB were not around I would DEFINITELY still go to CR, but I wouldn't have those FANTASTIC experiences that ZB has afforded me in the past, and will hopefully afford me in the future...

No DR, SL, ZB; then maybe two trips and I would have forgotten all about CR. I did all the touristy events on the first few trips. :roll: Even now I only go every 3 or 4 months and have no problem with the wait as by the end of most of my trips I've hit the wall and can't wait to get the hell home. The only reason I go is for the location and convenience of already knowing the routine. If I didn't mind taking long flights so much I would of already probably branched out to other places, but I'm sure that will come in the near future as breathing the fumes from the gulch traffic makes me feel like shit after a few days. :evil:
