If you wanna get technical, BBS , in the computer sense at least, stands for Bulletin Board System. For all intents and purposes, it's what we would call a "forum" today. They were big in the U.S. in the early 90's , in the days before the internet, where instead of a moderated website, everybody would dial up to some dudes house who had a server. I guess Japan just kept the terminology, while in the US it became archaeic.
And after reading pretty much every post in the China forum, it looks like Sammon hit it right on the head in the second post about what BBS stands for: Brothels (in) Barber Shops. That seems to be consistent with the way it is used.
Indientally, I was in Fujian, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou back in 2000 and I didn't notice any of these types of barber shops. All action was in-hotel,or from the KTV places.
