I was in the pub this evening with a friend and he asked me this, not what treatments / modalities but what do I do. Have to admit I had to think about that for a few moments. Ended up by saying "I help people change their lives."I thought would be interesting to see how others would answer it, so - what is it you do?Mat xxx

What is it you do?

I like to say, "I help people overcome back and neck pain (or injury, depending on whom I'm talking to) through therapeutic massage therapy." I don't like to just say "massage therapist" because they usually say something along the lines of "OH, you're a MASSEUSE! (I'm not a female, argh) That is sooo cool. I just don't see how you can touch people's feet."

It really is hard to put it into words.  We do so much.

I help people become aware of what they do to their body's on a daily basis and how to make changes for the better.
I help people understand what stress does to them and then help them relax and release stress.

I help people understand that they have a right to take care of themselves.

I give people a moment in time when it is all about them.

Last night i was caught unawares, and really felt like Masthera said - so hard to put into words.As Seforum.xxx said, i am definately not a MASSEUSE or MASSUER - I am a Massage Therapist. I am always very quick to make that known.Foz xxx

I absolutely LOVE working on FEET!  If I ever get lost in a moment while giving massage and go over on my time, it's all in the feet!I was introduced to a woman earlier tonight at a coffee shop, and she just happened to ask me what I do for a living.  I said "I'm a Massage Therapist working on getting my own business going."  She said, "Oh, really? You know, my friends keep telling me I have to get a massage!"  So, I offered her one of my business cards, and told her my hourly rate, and she said, "You'll be hearing from me!"  It was funny because I had to assure her that I was a CERTIFIED Massage Therapist.  She said something like, "So, do you know how to do all that stuff, that massage stuff, or do you just like to do it for fun?"  Kind of funny!

P.S. A good friend of mine always calls me a masseuse!  She's never heard me utter that word, so I don't know why she uses it, but I just don't have the heart to say, "Hey, I'm not some kind of sex worker!"  Do any of you have to tell friends or family that you're a massage therapist, not a masseuse or masseur?  Why on earth do people think those terms are still acceptable?

Oh, I get called a masseur by my parents (though they know I like to be called a massage therapist), and I get called a masseuse by some of the ladies at the salon I work at (they know too). I guess for them it's just easier to make it one word? *shrug* I dunno, but I just stopped correcting them. Most of the people around here call a therapist "masseuse" whether male or female, and that term doesn't mean prostitute around here, as we don't have any therapists that advertise 'that' type of massage. The joys of a small town, lol.

LMAO! I love how our friends and family help us out, though sometimes they just say the wrong things, lol. My mum once told someone to let me "rub them down with some oil." Don't have to put it so... THAT way?! lol

Dori, lol, that's funny Thanks gran indeed! When I told my Grandma what I was going to be doing she looked at me like I was insane. I assured her that I wouldn't be doing any funny business.

So many of my friends and clients introduce me as "Their" Masseuse that I think it would be rather insulting to correct them.  When I first started out I would correct everyone about the Masseuse thing (((in a rather *Royal* kind of way)))...but now...*shrug*...it doesn't bother me so much.  I generally just answer back with, "Yes, I'm the Massage Therapist." and leave it go.  Fozzyo & Caring Hands...glad I could give you both a laugh!!!
