What is the best way to introduce a new dog to the family?

I am getting a 3 year old dog, and I would like to know the best way to introduce it... I have 2 cats- 1 that's afraid of it's shadow, and 1 that loves EVERYTHING especially dogs. We have a fenced in backyard as well. Oh, and a pool and I live in a 2 story house... Any suggestions?
