What is the clicking found while massaging a back?

As a dutiful boyfriend, I occasionally give my girlfriend the odd back massage.. While rubbing her upper back, near the shoulder blades, there is occasionally small areas that when massaged feel like they're clicking, my question is: What are these? I thought they might be calcium deposits but it does seems extreme.. they seem quite common, are they just tensed muscles?

I think it may just be the air bubbles in the synovial fluid popping.

There isn't much back there other than the spine and ribs. If her back muscles were tight they could have been pulling her ribs out of their socket somewhat and the massage let the muscles relax and the ribs were popping back into place. That would say her muscles were very tight to have that happen. To give her a real treat have her free up her back muscles. That will keep them from tightening up like that in the first place and it will leave her more in the mood for 'other' things. Here's how she can free up her back muscles to get real relief in her back:

(do from a sitting position)
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.
For best results relax the body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
