Since you already have received a technical explanation (and no it isn't pushing harder) let me tell you the difference from the patient view. A swedish massage is a light to medium pressure than is more designed to loosen the muscles and to release toxins. Where the deep tissue penetrates deeper into the cause of the soreness and uses more pressure. The additional pressure might cause increase soreness during the massage with the increase in pressure. But I find the deep tissue massage to be much longer lasting and beneficial than a swedish. Example when I receive a swedish massage, I can feel relaxed but getting up the next day, the effect is minimal. Where as, the deep tissue massage, I might be a tad bit sore then next day, but the relax and lack of soreness might last a couple of weeks. After I have receive the deep tissue massage and witnessed it benefits, I have never gone back to a swedish massage.
