What kind of chair do you use?

Hi,

I have been using a normal chair (which used to be in the bedroom!) that has a low back and no arm rests. It seems to do the job but I always worry it looks kind of unprofessional. I have only recently qualified and just had a few clients so have not had much feedback yet. I also want something that would be most comfortable for the client.

I was wondering what other therapistsuse to practice ther IHM? Has anyone tried the chairs witha face hole (on-site massage type)?

I use a normal folding padded chair (Argos £7.99). If you worry about whether your chair looks professional, you could always explain to your clients that traditionally, in India, the massage is carried out with no special paraphenalia whatsoever and very often, the floor, a beach mat or barber's chair is used.

I've heard that the on-site massage chairs canbe awkward when repositioning the client for the face massage. They are also very heavy and would take up valuable boot space if you're mobile.

Just my opinion though........

I used to use a computer kneeler type chair but recently bought an on site massage chair and have very good feedback about how comfortable it is , you can use with the face cradle poition in or that can be removed and the client can sit on as you would with an ordinary chair but you can lower the back to suit

i find it folds down well and isn't particularly heavy and the best bit ......
i got it off ebay with a 12 month warranty for £60 + £20p&P and saw the exact same chair in a beauty suppliers for £245 exlc vat

Many thanks Soar and Calmer for your advice. I need to buy something else as the client I had yesterday was quite short and it was quite akward with the chair I'm currently using, as I couldn't reach right down below the scapula. Still trying to decide whether to go for an on-site type chair or not as keep reading some love and some hate them!
Soar, would you mind letting me know which company you bought your chair from on ebay?

I use a professional massage chair, the face rest, seat height and angles are all adjustable for client comfort. I got it from a UK suppier, and think it was around the E200 mark so a little expensive, especially for newly qualified therapists. Salon Services do good deals here in Ireland. Recently I have been working with a lot of larger framed clients, so find it ideal.

I use a folding wooden chair from IKEA partly because it is easy to transport for events. I don't understand how you can use the on site massage chair for IHM. How do you access the front of the hairline and the face?
I have to admit, tho, I have had a couple of larger clients and have been on the lookout for a more sturdy/wider seat version of my chair.

the client can sit facing the front as they would on any other chair as the headrest can be removed

some clients don't like to have face massage so I tend to give them more back an head work , the front of the hair line is accesible when they are resting their face in the cradle
