I work in Albuquerque, NM. And though we have a reputation for being a backward, stuck-in-the-desert, fly-over state; the people here are actually very open to alternative healing. They will often seek bodywork before chiropractic, have chiropractors recomend massage, have doctros recomend acupuncture or bodywork,(though the last are fairly rare and mostly come from the youngest and most progressive of MD.s), and bodyworkers recommending energy work. There are several factors at play here. One is local custom. There's a thriving Native American population here, and unlike some that I've experienced in other states, many of them keep to a very tradtional way of life, (even to the extent that spanish is a second language, and English a third,) including traditional medicine which includes bodywork, faith healing, and herbal remedies. Another factor is unregulated or illeagle immigration from the south. There are many here who turn to bodyworkers and other natural healers because they have to fly under the radar. Though local legislation is very lax on the subject (alowing illeagles to get driver's licenses and college scholarships) there's still some fear of deportation. And then there's the local economy. Because most local employers can find cheap labor who don't insist on benefeit packages, (see above paragraph), and the average Doctor's visit cost of $150.00, people here are willing to explore less expensive forms of treatment.
