In the area where I live (small town).  I want to offer something no one here specializes in. Does any one think doing massage on disabled childern with special needs would be more trouble than its worth.  ???

I think from the big picture you're going in the right direction by trying to separate yourself from other therapists.  Unfortunately, I think your clientele base will be limited.  There will be a limited number of children that would fit into this category and then how many of them would have parents who would see massage as beneficial?  Of course, if you already have some sort of relationship with a group that caters to disabled children then it might work.  I think you would be better spent trying to find something that would separate you from the competition but would speak to larger group.  Just my thoughts.  Good luck.  Joe E.

Maybe look into specializing in a specific technique...one that may be especially valuable to disabled children as well as the larger population. A fellow therapist in this area absolutely LOVES muscular release techniques. I prefer things like Watsu and Swedish massage....things that have a smooth flow. You might want to look more into touch for health, more gentle touch techniques or muscular reeducation. You can find classes on anything now. Best way to find what you like is to take intro classes and then use some of that with your clients. See which fits your style. Then start advertising what it is you've chosen as your specialty and target people who will benefit most from your services. Good luck!

How about offering private sessions on infant/child massage for parents (including those with special needs children & how that could greatly benefit the child AND the family dynamics) and/or small classes on 'a great back rub'. My insurance (IMA Group) covers me when giving classes for personal enrichment for groups of 1-9 people. You may have to invest in some classes yourself to be able to offer these things, but it would be worth it. For instance, don't give away your entire trade when doing these classes. Let it be known that you offer these services as well. Just, for example in a back rub class, do a 'chair massage' using a parsons chair & bolster pillows... teaching how to keep your body mechanics such that your hands & thumbs don't wear out in a minute or less. Share some innovative techniques, but not all the 'tricks in your bag'.Just a thought.Also....The "you've gotta have a gimmick" mind set may not be the magic bean that grows the beanstalk for you. It truly takes time to build a solid, profitable practice. Many therapists who have one of their own will tell you that simply offering the very best work possible for a healthy value set will get you the most valuable advertisement/networking possible:  word of mouth referrals!Good luck in your endeavors!Jill/Sagetherapist

what to do

I was affiliated with AMTA (associate status), but the school I graduated from is no longer part of their 'connections'. That now leaves me up the creek, because I'm at the point where I need to upgrade to Prof status. The school either has to be part of the program, or I have to take the Nat'l exam. I investigated the IMA Group out of curiousity, and liked the insurance policy, so I went for it.No political reasons, or anything like that. It was convenient, easy and I felt good about it.Jill/Sagetherapist
