What to expect as an IC...

I just graduated from Massage school and am going to be an independent contractor because I don't want to be tied up in any non-compete clause contracts.What I'm wondering is if I can expect a written contract agreement of any kind from the salons I choose to work in?  Do any of you guys have any experience with this?  I'd like a contract to set out what perceneforum.xxxe I'm to be paid and how often I'm to come in for them with the ability to increase my frequency in the salon as time goes on (hope that makes sense).Any advice and wisdom you can share is much appreciated as always.Thanks,S

I think if you are in IC then you pretty much just pay rent on time. آ I believe that as an independant contractor you are just that - independant. آ Its up to you to decide when you are/are not in your office and you take the profit from your work, not paid by % or comission. آ I may be wrong buts thats my understanding of an IC?You absolutely can expect a written agreement, and I encourage you to make sure you get one! GO over issues like rent, how Gift certificate sales are to be dealt with, expectations and any other offers they make. آ ALWAYS GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING! آ It seems that we massage therapists often are underestimated. آ  Good luck - this will be a VERY fun time for you!!!  Getting started was the most fun Ive had with this career!

I was an IC for a Chiropractor and was paid by %.  I also was an IC for a spa and was paid by %.I agree with DoriKaters, get it in writing.As an IC you are a little limited (I couldn't work when the office was closed), but for the most part you are independent.  Figure out how you want things to work and base your contract off of that.Good Luck!

What to expect, it really depends.I'm starting a job as an IC, and it sounds a lot different than a lot of other arrangements I've heard of. I will be paying a rent fee each month, as opposed to a %. I will have set shifts that I am on the books and have use of a room.Some IC's do have to sign a no-compete clause, I was offered one such position, but turned it down for other reasons. I thought pretty much all IC positions would require such a clause.Whether or not you have open access to the massage room will depend on if you are the only therapist using the room or not.Are you perhaps just wanting to rent a space somewhere and be your own business? I'm currently renting out of a salon and I'm not an IC, I'm just a renter. The space is mine, and the business is mine, which means all the responsibility is mine as far as marketing, cleaning, etc. I opted to use my cell as my business line and book my own appointments. As an IC, your usually working within another business, and under their business name. Does that make any sense? I'm not sure if it does to me, lol. Good luck!

What to expect as an IC...

Thanks guys.  Just didn't know what to expect.  DK - I'm really excited to be starting something completely different from what I've been doing for the past 8 years...looking forward to it ;DI plan to work for a couple salons for a while as an IC to get as much hands-on experience as possible in 1-2 years while building up my own practice on the side.  I have no intentions of soliciting any of the spas' clients as it seems I should have enough people living around me.  So, I have no problem with a spa telling me I can't solicit their clients...just makes the clients uncomfortable anyway...
