What to Wear

Hi Guys,

Haven't been on the forum for a while b/c I've been busy with school,....physical therapy assitant, and I thought I would never get to use my skills as a MT,.....graduated in May. Low and behold I lucked out, ....via a friend of a friend who owns a high end salon and apparently is in dire need for a therapist,.....but who only goes through word of mouth.

Anyway, long story short, I start working on Saturday. Doing chair massages to build up rapport, and thus hopefully transistion the clients to those who will get full bodies massages done in the salon at a later date. Anyway, my question is. I'm not sure what exactly to wear; and if I should wear something different when doing chair massages on the street just outside the salon compared to when I'm working inside.

Almost forgot to mention. I'm male, 27 years old, and athletic build. The salon clients are 98% female, all with financial means. I don't want to come off unprofessional or cheesy, but I wasn't sure if whatever I wear should accentuate my physique as well or not.

Also any recomendations on marketing would be great. Basically the owner said the his old therapsit started to try to take the clients and make them his own, .......which I would never even cross my mind.........however he said that the service is wanted, but there hasn't been anyone to provide it for a while,....thus the chair massages to build interest back up and let them know that I'm there.

When I worked for a spa we were asked to wear a white top and khaki pants. Nothing too tight or revealing - just a nice cotton V-neck since I am not a fan of polo shirts.

Well I happen to like Polo shirts, I guess I just like a little collar, but a nice v-necked shirt might work as well. It sort of depends on the weather if you're working outside... *Shrug* I'd think "dressy cassual." You don't need a button down oxford shirt and tie... but you don't need to be wearing a 20 year old t-shirt and jeans with holes either.
Khaki or other color work/dress pants would be appropriate IMO. You could wear colors which are similar or complimentary to the salon's colors. The salon I used to work in preferred black and white. So I still have a lot of black pants and white polos, even though I haven't worked there for a couple years.
I don't think the polo or t-shirt need be overly tight.
After all, massage is about their tight muscles, not yours. LOL Look at pictures available online at the AMTA or AMBP for ideas on proper attire for providing chair massage or massage therapy in general.
While you may be a bit more dressed up if you choose when providing chair massage, you need to remember that you'll still need to have the freedom to move around, stretch and kneel.
Try on a couple possible outfits and ask a friend!

What kind of marketing is the salon already doing? Are you going to be the only MT there?

I work in a salon and we wear black aprons to distinguish ourselves as spa staff.

I would wear what you were wearing in the PT office. Just as professional. You do not want to reveal your fisique, because you don't want to make the wrong impression. I have had many women complain that they felt uncomfortable going to a guy because he was trying to show off his rippling muscles at some of the other spas in the area....

PG, I hear what your saying (hopefully you just mean dress conservative-professional) but to me what you just wrote is like saying "don't show off your breasts" to a woman. If a woman has breasts that stick out, then she can't hide them. If a man has rippling muscles he can't really hide those either.

My MT dresses semi trendy with nicely cut slacks and shirts that are not loose. As a result none of his clothes brush against me when he works, and I am sure he feels good/confident about his appearance. His clothes fit the way they are intended to be worn not too tight and not too baggy. He doesn't wear sleeves shorter than a t-shirt or pants shorter than his ankle.
