What would be a good way to introduce a character quickly then move on with...

...the story? Hi, I'm writing a story, so i don't really wanna give away my plot, so to sum it up, we have a girl (duh), and she meets a guy (not much of a love interest, so get that little thought out of your head!), and they go on an adventure. TADA! Well that was quick! haha well my main question is, how do you make the whole meeting and transition into adventure fast. Because the whole story doesn't revolve around these two meeting and become really good friends, the main stuff comes later. I want to be able to fit this into about 11,000 words (or about the equivalent of one of my chapters). So i was thinking make it where the girl just visits some monumental (and a few small) actives that the two do together and they are shown bonding and becoming closer and closer, and then they get to move on to the rest of their adventure. Does this make sense? i hope so! Do you have any better idea's? I'm having a bit of writers block because i want to just get through this part as quick as possible! Thanks! :)
