I left it until late in the first year, around 10 months. Six months is the usual time given for introducing any solid food, but what people never seem to mention is that 6 months is supposed to be the earliest food is offered, not the recommended time. I kept breastfeeding until the baby could pick up food herself from the high chair tray, at around 8 months, and gave her things like pieces of cooked sweet potato and carrot. Other things were introduced gradually over the next few months. She was always extremely healthy, gained weight well, and was never sick. I am all for delaying solids, personally, although I know many parents like to start them very early.
