When is the right time to introduce a new parakeet to my male parakeet I've had

since Saturday? I just bought a single male parakeet Sunshine (Sunny) on Saturday. He's young. He's very lonely. I already have him used to finger perching, and I have a large cage. Everytime I play anything that sounds birdlike (especially parakeet noises) he goes nuts chirping and climbing the cage. He wants a buddy. I'd like to get another male so I don't need to worrry about them reproducing (a relative of mine had a female that died when an egg got stuck internally). Would they fight at this stage? He's great with my 3 year old male maltese/pomeranian mix dog.

Yes he should be fine as long as you slowly introduce them. Get a cheap cage for him to stay in until they're ready. Put them side by side, and when they show interest in each other and know that they aren't threats, you can take both birds out to play in "no birds land". If they seem to get along then you can put them in the same cage but monitor them for the first few days to make sure they get along. Remember to quarantine the new bird to make sure your Sunny doesn't get sick. Unless of course you buy from the same area and store he came from.
